Why 18k Gold Vermeil Is the Smartest Jewelry Buy Under $100

There are four grades of gold jewelry in the under-$200 category. Most shoppers only know the word "gold plated" and assume it all means the same thing. It does not. Here is the order, cheapest to best.

Gold plated (avoid for daily wear)

A microscopic layer of gold, often less than 0.5 microns, over a cheap base metal like brass or copper. Wears off in weeks to months. The reason "cheap jewelry turns your neck green."

Gold filled (decent, rare in zodiac pieces)

A thicker gold layer (usually 5 percent of total weight) mechanically bonded to a base metal. Lasts years. Harder to find in under-$100 fashion jewelry.

Gold vermeil (the sweet spot under $100)

A minimum of 2.5 microns of real 18k gold bonded to a solid sterling silver base, not cheap base metal. To be legally called vermeil in the US, it has to meet that spec. It lasts for years with basic care, does not turn your skin, and costs a fraction of solid gold.

Solid gold (expensive, overkill for fashion)

14k or 18k solid gold throughout. Beautiful, heavy, and starts at around $400 for a comparable zodiac pendant. Worth it for heirloom pieces. Overkill for a daily zodiac necklace you want to layer and swap.

What Arvea uses

Every piece in the Arvea zodiac collection is 18k gold vermeil over solid sterling silver, set with moissanite. That is the best-in-class build under $100.

Simple care rules: no chlorine, no perfume spray directly on the piece, store in a pouch or its gift box when not wearing. A polishing cloth every few weeks keeps it new. That is it.
